This article is one in a series about recovery from tik addiction, written with gratitude to Yasmin, who agreed to let me tell her story to inspire others. Tik is the term used in Cape Town for crystal meth.

Yasmin’s tenth session started with a confession. She had shared a friend’s pipe two days previously, as such she had 11-12 days of being totally clean, one mishap, and then two days clean afterwards. Looking at her, I could see that it was not one or two tokes only. So we set to work on this to start with.

As with any illegal drug, using crystal meth can cause psychological effects as well as physical risks. This article will explain some of the health risks faced when chronic use of meth is evident.

If a person is cooking crystal meth in their home, they can be exposed to serious danger. The toxic nature of doing this can expose your skin to chemical spills. In addition to that, you can also get burns on your skin due to skin exposure. If children are around, it’s also dangerous for them because they can be exposed to chemical spills and burns as well. It’s easier for this to happen to them because of their curious nature.

Researchers studies that chronic meth abusers will slowly changes their brain functions to a level which will reduced motor speed and impaired verbal learning as well as emotional and memory problems.

Gay men are a population who are at-risk for body image and eating disorders. Gay men are susceptible to anorexia, bulimia, muscle dysmorphia, and exercise addiction. Gay men are likely to work out for appearance reasons, while straight men are likely to work out for health reasons. One reason for body image concerns is for social approval and social acceptance in the gay community. For this same reason, gay crystal meth addiction is at an all time high. Crystal meth can be used to try and maintain a certain body image, no different than anorexia or bulimia.

Methamphetamine is an addictive drug made in home labs. When taken by mouth, snorted, injected or smoked, it produces intense pleasure by releasing excessive amounts of the brain’s reward chemical – dopamine. The euphoria that it produces is longer lasting than even cocaine, and meth users are reluctant to give up this highly addictive central-nervous-system stimulant.

As one addict explains, “Sex became an endurance sport I couldn’t get enough of — I felt great so much of the time I couldn’t even think of a downside.” If perfect euphoria is the ultimate self-indulgence, then meth can be labeled Chemical Masturbation.

Crystal meth can be a dangerous and addictive drug to anyone, but it is especially harmful and impactful to that of a teenage boy or girl. It is a drug that can change the teen completely from the inside out, no matter what age they begin taking it. A long-term teenage crystal meth user may have side effects of withdrawal for months after they’ve stopped using, which makes it extremely harmful to the teen’s health and happiness. Although it is not widely discussed, it is important to know teenagers do have options for crystal meth rehab facilities to receive the treatment needed to recover fully and have a healthy adulthood.
