Q&A: Who Are Your Top 5 Overrated Rappers? What You Think About Mine?

Question by Who You Funkin’ With?: Who are your top 5 overrated rappers? What you think about mine?
In no order:
1. AZ – Doe or Die is not a top 5 release from 1995, thus not a classic. Everything else I’ve heard from him has just been fair. Yet, I see him mentioned as underrated a lot and in many people’s top 10’s.
2. Big L – Again, Lifestylez ov da Poor & Dangerous was not a top 5 release from 1995, thus not a classic. The Big Picture was fair. Not underrated or Top 10 material.
3. Eazy-E – It upsets me when I see his name on lists above rappers like Ice Cube and The D.O.C.
4. Kool G Rap – Gets too much praise. Sure his flow is fast and nice, but it’s not the best, nor is he lyrically that great, IMO. He has no great albums, but a lot of good albums and a solid discog, but I don’t think he has a classic album. But people give this dude 3-4 classics. Are you tripping? There’s better albums from those years that were released than a Kool G album.
5. Krs-One – Criminal Minded is classic, but I just don’t like him, his delusional philosophies, his voice, etc. I can’t get into anything he’s done post-BDP. “I’m a Blunt Being Smoked” is hands down one of the worst songs I’ve ever heard from someone that people seriously consider the best ever.
Don’t be offended, it’s just my opinion.
@ Kevin D: I agree about Andre being overrated too. I was gonna put Eminem on it, but that’s kinda obvious, however, Em used to be great. I kinda agree about Lupe too, but he’s one of my favorites who debuted in the 2000’s.
@ Tyler: I agree with Big Daddy Kane being overrated too. “Long Live the Kane” is boring to me.
@ ST: I agree with you about Slug and Royce da 5’9″ being overrated too. Slug almost made this list.
@ 54: I respect your opinion. We have different taste and perception on how we rate things. My music library is still growing and at the moment I only consider 55-60 rap/hip-hop albums bonified classics. It’s an elite class in my eyes. Kinda like the Hall of Fame.
My 4 classics from 1995 are:
Liquid Swords – Gza
Me Against the World – 2Pac
Only Built 4 Cuban Linx… – Raekwon
The Infamous – Mobb Deep
4,5,6, Lifestylez, Doe or Die are not on those 4 albums level of quality and impact. Those three albums are on the same level as Soul Food by Goodie Mob, E 1999 Eternal by BTNH, All Balls Don’t Bounce by Aceylone, Cypress Hill III, and Return of the 36 Chambers. Good, but not classic or great.
@ Jack K: Other rappers mastered the flow Kool G “invented”. I think he has a lisp or something…maybe his voice annoys me. Anyway, I didn’t say 5 was the cut-off limit for classics, but let’s not throw around the word too much.
