Epilepsy and Alcohol?
Question by Matt: Epilepsy and alcohol?
okay from what ive read on other sites it says a few drinks is okay when you have epilepsy. but a lot is bad, and that you normally won’t have a seizure while drinking you will have it during “alcohol withdrawal” which if i’m mistaken would imply to have withdrawal you would have to be an alcoholic.Okay I don’t normally drink in fact I’ve really only been drunk once in my life before so would this mean its ok to get drunk while I have epilepsy if its not a regular thing? or would it still be bad. I take medication for my epilepsy I take oxcarbazepine and all it says about alcohol on the bottle is it will increase drowsiness and nothing else. I haven’t had a seizure in 7 yeats so would it be ok for me to drink

My step mom has very severe epilepsy and she is allowed to drink. Her Dr told her to drink 1 glass of wine a night to help her heart, she drinks 2, and has never seized while drinking or have had any type of alcohol withdrawl. During celebrations she does drink more, accidently gets drunk usually because she isn’t used to hard liquor, and again, she never has had a seizure because of it. She gets seizures from stress mostly and blinking lights, loud noise things like that. She never has had an issue with wine and also takes medication.
I hope that info makes you a little relieved, but to be safe, ask the Dr about the risks.
