Question by LeDisko: I need recommendations for books with teens as main characters, but I’m tired of happy unrealistic stories.?
I am tired of reading books that make the world seem like a piece of cake, where the characters are living in some unrealistic world where everything works out in their favor and they always have happy endings. I want to read a book that shows a darker side to the life of a teenager and follows their struggles. I prefer that it has romance in it, but it’s okay if it doesn’t. I’m looking for books with realistic qualities: teens falling into drug addiction, rehab, mental hospital, death, rape, suicide, alcohol, partying, murder, cancer, depression, etc. Just something that shows the flaws and darker side of our world.
I lovelovelove the book Candy by Luke Davies, which was about struggling heroin addiction, and I love Chuck Palahniuk’s books. I know someone will recommend Go Ask Alice, but I have already read that. I’m not a fan of books written like a diary or in poetry. And I dislike the Twilight series.
