Alcohol Detox…what to Expect?

Question by mom of three: Alcohol detox…what to expect?
My bf went into a inpatient rehab center 2 days ago for help. I haven’t heard from him since. I know that he is going through withdrawal symptoms so I understand why he hasn’t. I am just worried. I called the center to ask if he was okay, but they won’t tell me anything. He has drank for years. He drinks anywhere from 10 to 18 a day. He wants to stay clean when he comes home! I’m trying to find Al-Anon in my area so I can help him all I can when he gets out. I can visit him for an hour in a couple of days. I would like to know what to expect. Any advice I can get would be appreciated!

It’s actually a very good thing that you weren’t around for his detox – he may not have been aware of your presence, and it probably would have upset you. Coming off alcohol is one of the only withdrawals that can kill a person, unless they’re being supervised by a medical professional. It can include hot and cold spells, hallucinations, spasms, confusion, gastrointestinal upset, palpitations, tremors… the list goes on and on. The severity of his withdrawal depends on how long he’s been drinking, how heavily, and how many times he’s detoxed in the past. His symptoms could last up to a week.

That being said, congratulations on supporting your boyfriend in his journey towards sobriety!
