The Hype Behind Diet Drinks

The Hype Behind Diet Drinks

There are many diet drinks and other low calorie beverages available to people to make them think that by drinking these beverages alone, somehow it will help them to lose the weight that they have been trying for so hard to lose. Wrong. In fact, many of these so-called diet drinks that are out there on the market are nothing but sugar, water and food coloring (as well as a list of names that none of us can pronounce). So, if this is the case, then why do we continue to torture ourselves into drinking them?

The problem isn’t the diet drink; the problem begins with our diets. When you get up in the morning, what is the first thing that you do? For many of us, the first thing that we do after we get out of bed and brush our teeth is we have breakfast. Breakfast for some people can be nothing more than a cup of coffee. However, for other people, breakfast can include a whole smörgåsbord of food such as waffles with whipped cream, scrambled eggs, bacon and a glass of orange juice. We convince ourselves that either of these two options is acceptable as healthy when in fact neither is particularly good for you.

It is true that breakfast is the most important meal of the day. This is why you should consciously make an effort to choose foods that will not only fill you up (to prevent over-eating later on in the day), but you should choose foods that are low in sugar and cholesterol and high in fiber. A great example of what a healthy breakfast looks like can be anything from a bowl or two of cheerios with skim milk and a grapefruit to a cup of oatmeal with cinnamon and raisins thrown in. You can be creative and still be healthy all the while. Having a cup of coffee is fine, but it shouldn’t be the only thing that you “eat” for breakfast, nor should it be loaded down with a ton of extras. Did you know that straight, black coffee by itself has very few calories? It kind of makes you wonder why those Starbucks Iced Mochas are so fatty. In America, people really get into dressing up their coffee beverages. People will add on whipped cream, whole milk, chocolate syrup and more and then wonder why they aren’t losing the weight that they thought they would.

This same notion can be applied to diet drinks. The wonderful thing about the Internet is that it makes most nutritional information from restaurants available at the touch of a button. Recently, I went to an undisclosed but widely popular smoothie restaurant where I proceeded to order what was listed as a “healthy” all natural smoothie. It consisted of mangoes, pineapple, bananas, crushed ice and some sort of whey powder mix. However, when I looked at the information online, I discovered that the beverage is really nothing more than sugar and water! The mangoes aren’t actual mangoes, they’re the canned kind, and the same went for the other fruit. The beverage tasted great, but it was all sugar! When you have any sort of canned fruit, typically sugar is added in the canning process as well as something else in order to help preserve it. Examine the food that you consume because it may be beneficial to your overall health!
