How Do You Know for Sure That a Heroin Addict Has Kicked the Habit?
Question by stylingsarah: how do you know for sure that a heroin addict has kicked the habit?
My older brother has been thru detox, and is awaiting a bed for a drug rehab centre. This time he sounds sincere, and he finally is sorry for his actions. Before it was always, pity for him, etc. I just am leery, and wonder if any others had this experience before, and what to expect. Thanks

I have been through this several times with a close relative. All you can do is hope for the best and be supportive and upbeat. However, if he fails to stay clean, don’t be surprised. Continue to be supportive and try to get him back to help. I know the first reaction is anger, mine was, followed by isolation from the family. That is the wrong reaction! You must continue support while being firm in your communicating that you do not wish to see him continue his life in that way. He must understand that while you and your family care about him, his lifestyle is unacceptable behavior and if he ever wants anything from his life, he must change.
There are support groups for you as well, like Alanon (spelling?) that are for the support of families and individuals that have addidcted relatives. They can be a tremendous help to you and your family and can guide you along the path to helping your brother with his problem.
Best of luck!
