This came up recently when I was having dinner with some younger friends (early 20s). I made the comment that nearly every young lady (generally mid-to-late teens or very early 20s) that I know who has been in drug rehab has gotten pregnant really quickly after leaving their rehab program. Of the 8 or so girls I know who have been to rehab in the last few years, all but one was pregnant within about six months, and most were pregnant even faster than that. One of my dinner companions said that every single girl she knows who has been in rehab has been pregnant within a year of leaving rehab, and she knows a lot more girls who have been to rehab than I do.

I didn’t give it much thought at the time, but now I am wondering if maybe what they are thinking is if they have a baby, it will keep them off drugs?

What are your opinions?
I guess I should add that the girls who have been willing to discuss it with me admit that they were very careful about birth control before they went to rehab, but when I ask them about their birth control habits after rehab, they get kind of vague, and give nonsensical answers. For instance, one told me that it was “too much to think about.”

From the outside looking in, it really does appear to me that they actually want to get pregnant. All express surprise when they find out that they are, but all of them are determined to keep the baby right from the start, and I get the feeling that their “accidental” pregnancies are a little less accidental than they claim. I guess I am just trying to understand why the two seem to go together; get out of rehab, hurry and get pregnant.
