The Drug Abuse and Addiction Problem

Drug use has been in existence since the dawn of early civilization. Within the religious context, psychoactive substances were used by shamans and spiritualists in religious rituals to heighten one’s feeling and serve as a medium to converse with their gods. Drugs were also used, then and now, in the field of medicine to ease the physical pain felt by sick people. However, in recent times, the illicit use of drugs has been increasing which oftentimes cause adverse effects to users and the society as a whole; this dilemma prompted authorities to prohibit the usage of certain specified drugs.

One of the primary reasons for the prohibition is the increasing number of deaths attributed to illicit drug use. The high number of mortality rate is caused by drug overdose, killings attributed to warring gangs, mental imbalance caused by prolonged use, and deaths from diseases such as AIDS indirectly caused by drug use. Although, certain drugs proved to be beneficial to some people, others are lethal enough to cause death, especially when these are abused. These circumstances warrant stringent measures to counter the adverse effects of illicit drug use.

The high number of deaths is not the only reason to justify a fierce war against illicit drug usage, but the harmful effects these drugs do to our bodies pose other indirect hazard to other members of the society. In the long run, human progress is staggered due to the impairment of the psychological aspect of drug users leading others adverse effects; one instance is that parents who are drug addicts tend to have abused and traumatized children. In order to prevent this, it is only right to wage a fierce war against illicit drug use.
