U.S. Likely To Miss Deadline On Prison Rape Rules
Five years after Congress expressed alarm at rape in U.S. prisons, the Justice Department is in danger of missing a deadline for new standards targeting the problem. An unusual coalition of groups is calling for action, but corrections officials say wholesale changes will cost too much.

‘Where’s the forgiveness?’
Column: In 2005, Ryan Harnish signed a plea bargain with Kane County courts. It put him away for three years and 110 days in correctional facilities, including the medium/maximum security penitentiary Shawnee Correctional. One of his cellies there was a first-degree murderer. Harnish’s crime? Seven DUI convictions and several failures to appear in court.
