Does Downloading Torrents Affect My Internet Speed?

I’ve recently been addicted to downloading short movies of the internet through utorrent. Since then, my internet speed has gone wackO! its so much SLower than usual.
Does this have something to do with the fact that i have torrents downloading in the background? or is it just a coincidence?
