Why Is Marijuana Addiction a Problem?

Question by Jackolo: Why is marijuana addiction a problem?
Lately, I’ve been at odds with the Saint Mary Jane. I know I have an addiction, because I think about it every day. But at the same time, no matter how long I go without (currently sober/abstinent for about a week – not my first attempt at ‘quitting’), I still want to smoke.

The fact is, I love the herb – and always will. It feels good, I get to laugh at seemingly non-humorous events, and even brings me closer to others who also hit the pipe (cannabis culture scene). It’s a party just about every time. So what’s so wrong with that?

In my opinion, there’s a massive distinction between ‘addiction’ and ‘problem’. And at times, my addiction can become a problem – such as when I’m not working and can’t really afford it, which is so depressing I usually end up finding a way to get a bag… it’s a vicious cycle at times like these. But at other times, it’s better then sex. And I don’t feel like I could ever stop loving the stuff.

I’ve read countless articles/posts/threads about how people’s lives have become so much better after quitting the habit. But they completely fail to explain how. People like to blame the drug for the problem, though I feel it’s the person – not the drug – that’s the problem. And the masses use this as a reason to keep the stuff illegal and continue to incarcerate those whom choose to use.

I can say with absolute certainty that weed has actually improved my life more then it has diminished it. Again, I admit that at times it can be a problem – but so can cable TV and chocolate bars. Though, overall, it has given me a wider, more open-minded understanding of the world in which we live. It’s even brought me closer to my spiritual self. I can name countless occasions where I would simply blaze up and stare out a window after a rough day/week – from whence I emerged revitalized and ready to keep going.

So I guess my question is is this:
Where does one draw the line between an addiction and a problem? Some would say it’s when you find yourself spending money/time that you can’t afford on it.

Nevermind. Writing this has actually given me the answer. I’ll hit post anyways. 😉

an addiction IS a problem. contrary to what most people believe, you can become psychologically addicted to weed. you seem to understand this, so that’s good.
i’m the same way. when i have weed, all i want to do is smoke. if i have recently cut back, at first it is hard because i want to keep doing it, but it goes away after a while. personally i try to find ways that weed is holding me back or not doing me any good, and use these as reasons to continue to stay off it. i think weed will always be a part of who i am,at the same time i dont want to be high 24/7 so when i run out i usually try to not buy it for atleast 2 weeks to clear the fog and calm down.

I am one of the “masses” who votes to keep marijuana illegal. Its use is both an addiction and a problem. That is because, as you admit, it is psychologically addictive because the THC in it is a powerful mind altering substance. If you need a “crutch” like alcohol or cannabis to deal with the world then more than likely you have a mental disorder. You are not fully adjusted to reality and never will be, using it, as it distorts your perception of reality. This is the problem!

Another problem is the fact that it is legitimately illegal to use and possess and that makes one a criminal. The problem here is users and sellers have no respect for the law and breaking this law shows a general contempt for society’s edicts. We do not want a society containing people who are contemptuous of the law so they are locked up in a penitentiary to repent. This is expensive.

“The fact is, I love the herb- and always will. It feels good.” You are hooked! It is the same as alcoholism or tobacco, which are other expensive and dangerous addiction/problems. Try “narcotics anonymous”!

Good luck!
