Why Can’t I Get Addicted to Things?
Question by : Why can’t I get addicted to things?
I tried smoking when I was younger. And why did I quit? Not because I was concerned about the negative health effects nor because my parents caught me and made me stop. Rather, it was simply because I got bored with it and figured I could use the money better somewhere else. I found it interesting to try the different brands available and be part of the “smoker” culture for a while, but then just like other phases I went through in youth, I moved on to other things.
In contrast, my best friend who started smoking around the same time as I did is now a chain smoker, going through several packs a day.
In fact, my longest period of smoking regularly was when I was 15, but from 14 to 17 I went through several periods where I started smoking for a few weeks and then just stopped without any difficulty when I ran out of cigarettes. If there was any “addiction” involved it was that I was “addicted” to the the way smoking helped me make friends (I wasn’t normally very social) more than any physical or mental addiction to the drug.
Similarly, I drank irresponsibly as a youth (still do sometimes) but never became an alcoholic the way most of my uncles and cousins did, and smoked weed with the “stoners” for a while in high school but never found that I got hooked the way many of my friends did.
It’s for this reason that I feel I’ve never really understood addiction…when someone is addicted to something, my reaction is to say “why don’t you just stop doing it?”
I guess my question is, why do most people get addicted to things, while some people like me seemingly just don’t?
The only thing I’ve ever really gotten “addicted” to is information…does that count?
And yes, just to be clear, I am bragging about my superhuman abilities. Deal with it.
