Who and What Caused You to Stop Abusing Drugs/alcohol?

Question by califrniateach: Who and what caused you to stop abusing drugs/alcohol?
If you or someone you know is a recovering alcoholic or drug abuser, I’d like to know what made you want to change your life. Was it an intervention, someone you know talking to you about it? Did you hit rock bottom? Did you just one day decide? I really want to help a family member with this problem and I’d like to understand the process. Right now, they have no desire to change.(or so it seems)

Making this person aware of what people are saying/thinking is a start, however you can talk until your blue in the face and probably will not see results. Until, this person makes the decision himself/herself to quit using. And yes, it usually is after one has hit rock bottom and have lost something/someone that loves them. Your support will be appreciated when the time comes.
