What Is This Horrible Smell and How Do I Get Rid of It???

Question by ,: What is this horrible smell and how do i get rid of it???
We recently just moved into a new apartment building and are having issues with smells that are in the hallway and coming through to our apartment.

The first smell was a stale musty cigarette smoke smell, and we thought it was left over from the previous renter so we shampooed the carped seriously like eight times. But we can still smell it and think its coming up through the floorboards / heaters.

The second -and most horrible smell is one we haven’t been able to identify. My mother insists it is mothballs, but would a mothball smell permeate throughout the whole building? ?

also this second smell inst constantly there, I thought it was perhaps one of our nieghbors ethinic cooking…. but it makes me want to throw up so i dont think its comming form anything edible!

anyone know how to get rid of theses smells in out apt. even in the hallways?

also any ideas as to what could be causing this second smell?
and more importantly how to get rid of it?
So we have JUST contacted our landlord and he mentioned that someone had reported an odd smell before (im not sure how long ago?)
and it turned out to be drugs?!?!
so he is coming over to investigate.
no one else in the building has said anything so far

so could the smell im smelling possible be drug related??

Appartment rental is terrible for bad smells. It’s just lack of caring by the landlords and maybe a grass grow-op
