What Is “Mental Abuse”?

Question by Happy-2: What is “mental abuse”?
I see the term mental abuse used a lot here, but I don’t know what it means. Are mental abuse, verbal abuse, and emotional abuse all the same thing? If bad things have been done to you, as what type(s) of abuse would you categorize them?

Another question I have is, don’t you have to believe the person making the abusive comments in order for them to have an effect on you? For example, I have read some women complain how awful it felt to be told, “No other man would want you.” What I don’t understand is why a woman wouldn’t regard such a statement as obviously false and even laughable.

I’ve been married 21 years and we treat each other with respect. So, I don’t know what mental abuse is. Can you explain? Please provide examples if you have any.
Lol, vengence, I get your point, but what you’re saying honestly just makes you sound stupid! If someone said those things to me, I might feel slightly, temporarily hurt, but mostly I would feel sorry for the person who said them because it sounds so “hurt child”.
