What Do You Think of Corporal Punishment in Schools? at Home?

Question by J K: What do you think of corporal punishment in schools? At home?
I’m a 15 year old male. I know it’s going to be hard for some of you to believe, but I seem a bit old-fasioned compared to my peers. I try to talk to everyone with respect, I hold doors for people, use my manners, etc. I have never drunk, had sex or done drugs.

A lot of it is genetics. People in my family are just thinkers. But I think that a lot of my good behaviour stems from the wooden spoon. When I was little, I had an overactive conscience and used to punish myself when I did something wrong, but the odd times when I didn’t, there was the wooden spoon, or a good hard pinch.

Don’t go crying, “Child abuse!” because I really don’t mind, and my parents were by no means abusive (unfortunately, many are). I have been in many homes where parents do not lay their hands on a child, ever. Some of these kids are well behaved, but only because their parents are extremely strict in other ways. It seems like the same behavioural habits can be instilled in children without corporal punishment, it just takes much more effort. Grounding unruly kids just isn’t effective at times.

In school, there are certain kids who, for good reason, aren’t worried about punishment. If a child is going to be so rude to have marks removed, he probably doesn’t care about these marks. What would really shape these people up would be a good rap across the hand with a ruler when they are verbally abusing a teacher for the 4th time.

The problem is, with this right there are always sadistic, cruel adults who take advantage of it and beat children without justification. A very large risk.

What are your thoughts on the matter?
