Utterly Wasted
At my favorite soup kitchen, a little girl sat with dark sullen eyes and skin that stretched tightly across the length of her forehead.
Exasperated!
The Chinese cook whispered, her French daddy has AIDS, and her sister and mommy too.
Sadly, I wonder if she knows that she will die anytime soon.
Despite a comparatively high rate of HIV infections and noticeable cases of full blown AIDS, it would appear that effective educational programs have reduced the incidence of this virus and disease. According to a recent survey conducted in 2007 and 2008, Cambodia’s population was approximately 14,656,000. The number of people living with HIV/AIDS was about 75,000. It was reported that 20,000 people living with HIV/AIDS were women fifteen years old and older. About 4,400 children were HIV positive or had AIDS. 0.8 % of the adult population had the virus or the disease. And there were approximately 6,900 deaths caused by AIDS.
This was however, a marked decrease in the overall incidence of the virus and disease. A report issued by USA/AID indicated there were approximately 170,000 people living with HIV/AIDS in 2001. At this time, 2.7% of the adult population had HIV or AIDS.
The report also indicates that people with high rates of infection were sex workers and their clients, patients seeking care for sexually transmitted diseases, or other persons with known risk factors. People least at risk for the virus were pregnant women, blood donors or other people with no known risk factors.
Many experts believe that the decrease in the incidence of the virus may be attributed to effective educational programs directed toward people in high risk groups.
