Treatment for Alcoholism: Success in Natural Treatments for Alcoholism

Alcoholism is a chronic disease that wreaks havoc on your body’s systems and major organs (liver, heart, brain and kidneys) and will cause a deterioration in your health that can ultimately lead to death. Nobody wants to go there, but giving up alcohol is difficult and many alcoholics do not want to walk that path. In order to recover, the alcoholic must work their way through cravings, withdrawals and then abstain from alcohol forever. The problem seems insurmountable.

There are different stages of alcoholism and depending on what you read or who you talk to, these stages are defined differently. Basically, the first stage is an “immature” alcoholic who consumes less alcohol than the “mature” alcoholic and probably hasn’t been drinking for as long. Don’t get me wrong, they are still very much dependent on alcohol. However, the treatment plan of an immature alcoholic can be easier their alcoholism has been identified in its earlier stages. Treatment probably wouldn’t include hospitalization, rehabilitation centres or detox and, depending on their sheer will of wanting to give up alcohol, they may be able to stop drinking with little outside support.

The second stage is a more mature alcoholic. Treatment isn’t so simple. They have lived with alcohol addiction longer and their health tells a tale of alcoholism. The task of sobriety will be more difficult. They may need to go to a rehabilitation centre and the withdrawal period could be longer and more severe.

There are different approaches in the treatment for alcoholism and depending on what stage the alcoholic is at, various treatment methods may work better than others. Although alternative and natural treatment programs are known to be successful, a mature alcoholic needs to seek out a conventional treatment program initially. For an alcoholic to embark on treatment is a huge step in getting their life and health back and a supportive environment will be key to their success.

Studies have found alternative and natural treatment approaches are becoming increasingly popular and successful. They offer hope to those that prefer a more natural treatment to alcoholism. The following are some of the natural treatments that are available:

Meditation & Relaxation Technique. This technique encourages relaxation, reduces stress and withdrawal symptoms. Self Help (The Power of Positive Thinking). Since alcohol abuse can stem from feelings of stress, lack of confidence and low self-esteem, this method works on getting the alcoholic to think positively about themselves and the environment they live in. Hypnosis. Gives the subconscious mind suggestions of new behavior techniques. Acupuncture. Assists in reducing cravings for alcohol and reduces withdrawal symptoms. Success rates are known to be as high as 50%. Vitamin Therapies. Since alcohol abuse does so much damage to the body, nutrition therapies are believed to replace what the vital nutrients that alcohol strips away. Herbs and Chinese Medicine. Used to ease withdrawal symptoms and detoxify the body. It is also known to help with alcohol cravings.

Natural and alternative approaches work best when combined with conventional programs such as counselling, rehabilitation treatment centres and support groups, such as the well branded Alcoholics Anonymous. Alternative and natural treatments can offer additional and successful recovery options. The good news is that alcoholism is treatable.
