Time Off Work for Rehab?

Question by EMB: Time off work for rehab?
My husband needs to go to rehab for alcohol abuse. I have not yet been able to convince him of this but hopefully with an intervention we can. He was working in the restraunt business and I always felt like once he left that job the drinking would get under control. He has recently started a new job, and things have not changed. Can he take time for rehab? Can they fire him? I would hate to see him lose the job he worked so hard to get, but he really needs the help. Two years ago, he was in the hospital with the DTs, he quit drinking for a few months and gradually started again. He is now lying about it constantly. We have a 6 month old son and I don’t want him near him when he is drunk. I cry all the time cause of it and he just yells at me. When he is drunk he says he wants to kill me and all sorts of other nasty awful things. When he wakes up in the morning he acts like nothing happened and doesn’t believe me when I tell him.
I really need help getting him help.

I think he can get time off under the family medical leave act or the americans with disabilities act (if alcoholism qualifies as a disability). I’m not sure how much time though. Do you work? Can you talk to your human resources rep about? They’d be able to give you valuable information about what the law actually entails.
