Chapter 4
Entering Traffic: Automatic Transmission- brake pedal, shift into “D”, parking brake, adjust mirrors & blind spot, turn signal & hand signal, check mirrors and blind spot, release brake, look and steer, accelerate
Evaluate: ensure there is sufficient space to enter traffic. Check in the mirrors and blind spot
Prepare: activate the turn signal, if there is any doubt as to the signal being seen, use a hand signal as well. Re-check the mirrors and blind spot
Execute: release the brake pedal while looking towards your intended path. Turn the steering wheel as needed. Depress the gas pedal gently; increase speed as required.
Starting on an uphill slope in an automatic car: release the brake, when the accelerator causes the vehicle to pull forward. On very steep hills, the parking brake may be used to prevent rollback and should be released at this time instead of using the left foot
Following Time Intervals: (2 second time interval-permit’s the driver to steer and avoid a hazard on a dry surface and to apply the brake to prevent a collision up to 35 mph) (3 second time interval-50 mph) (4 second time interval-70 mph) (6 second time interval- permit’s the driver to maintain control in most adverse driving conditions)
Stopping and exiting your vehicle: brake, parking brake, park, let off of brake, make sure accessories are off, ignition switch, release clutch if there is one present, check mirror and blind spot, body turned, exit, lock vehicle doors, walk behind your car
Chapter 8
Regulatory signs
–remind road users of specific rules (obligations, prohibitions, etc.) that apply in each traffic situation where they are posted
–the background colors are red, white, and black
–ex: stop sign, yield sign, wrong way sign, do not enter sign, do not pass, and railroad cross buck, speed limit signs
Basic Speed Limits (unless otherwise posted)
near parks and playgrounds…15 mph
business and residential areas…25 mph
designated work areas…45 mph
highways or urban freeways…55 mph
rural freeways: max…70 mph min…45 mph
school buses and trucks…55 mph
–ex(continued): one way signs, traffic direction signs, lane-use control signs, prohibitory signs (turn prohibition signs, exclusion signs [no trucks, no bicycles, no pedestrians, hazardous cargo, no trucks, no motorcycles]), parking and stopping control signs ( red: no parking, standing, or stopping…..green: time limited parking), pedestrian control signs, other regulatory signs (divided highway signs and stop here on red)
Warning signs
–draw the attention to imminent danger or upcoming regulatory signs
–the background color is yellow
–the diamond shape indicates that danger is up ahead
–ex: school signs (school zone and school crossing), advance regulatory signs (stop ahead, yield ahead, and signal ahead), advance turn or curve signs (advisory speed plate, chevron alignment, and large arrow), advance crossing signs (like animal crossings), advance intersection signs, land reduction signs, divided highway signs, railroad signs, converging roadways (added lane sign and merge sign), warning-no passing zone-sign, obstacles in the roadway (double arrow and hazard markers), hill signs, hazardous road signs (bump, dip, pavement ends, soft shoulder, and slippery when wet)
Guide signs
–provide information (route markers, directions, destinations, services, points of interest or recreation, etc.)
–the background colors are: blue + red, white + black, green, blue, and brown
–ex: route markers, destination signs, recreation signs, and roadside services
Construction signs
–draw the attention of road users to road repairs, detours, special road closing for sports events, etc.
–the background color is orange
–the diamond shape indicates that danger is up ahead
–ex: speed, work site limits, and conditions in the work site
International signs: speed limit signs, regulatory signs, and warning and guide signs
Traffic signals: red arrow (stop. Turn prohibited in the direction of the arrow), flashing red light (stop, then proceed only when it is safe to do so-like a stop sign), yellow arrow (if you were intending to turn, you should stop), flashing yellow (cover the brake, proceed with caution, check before crossing the intersection-like a yield sign), green arrow (you may turn in the direction of the arrow after checking and yielding to pedestrians…this light may accompany a red signal, you may move in the direction of the arrow)
Lane-use signals: steady red X (identifies the lane below the signal as a lane that you may not use), steady downward green arrow (indicates you are permitted to drive in the lane under this signal), steady yellow X (means you should prepare to vacate, in a safe manner, the lane under the signal), flashing yellow X (identifies a lane reserved for left turns in both directions), flashing horizontal yellow or green arrow (indicates the direction in which you should direct your vehicle to chan
