The Impact of ADD Medication on Those Diagnosed vs. Those “normal”?

Question by s: The impact of ADD medication on those diagnosed vs. those “normal”?
I’ve just been diagnosed with ADD (15 yr old/girl). The diagnosis wasn’t really out of the blue or a sudden move for attention. I was diagnosed during a period where I was completely exhausted for spending the last few months (hours, days, nights) trying to improve the ‘problems’ I’ve been encountering and that have become detrimental to my life. Based on an inner feeling and the combination of my differences in processing/ controlling information as well as my high levels of creativity and thought process, I was in no denial about this condition. But while getting to become familiar with the condition and its patients, I’m starting to realize how many people abuse and claim they have it for these exact reasons: attention, acceptance, exuse. This got me asking myself, before taking my medication I was given (concerta), if I had mentally/ subconsciously mirrored these symptoms. If this was all real. I’m just…..I’m not entirely sure although I do know for sure that drugs are serious.

The effects:
The best example I have that might or might not describe the changes I experienced was in the second day when I took the pill and later decided to read my school book (I don’t do this often). The pill, though not as strong as the first day, acted like a hand putting tension around my brain. The words looked so clear, so big, so bold….like never before. My mind constrained and restricted. As time passed and the strength lessened, the tension and the hand gripping my brain (my focus) loosened, the words becoming smaller, and soon…my mind coming back asking myself about the book which was the first sign to me that the pill was fading (because many thoughts were coming back instead of info from the book). Here’s my worry…is it safe? Is this a moral thing to do to help myself? How consistent are the medications? Sorry for the long paragraphs…just trying to get ideas and thoughts off my chest.

ADD medications are speed, and they don’t know whether you have ADD or not. Adderall, etc have existed for over 100 years. There are highly suspect reasons as to why suddenly there is an amphetamine “disease” — medical and pharmaceutical companies are laughing all the way to the bank on this one, and at the expense of tossing-dice with peoples lives.

It also expands the definition of “drug” to mean any compound not approved by the FDA or state of Minnesota that produces effects similar to specifically banned substances. In essence, as the Star Tribune puts it, the definition now covers any …
