Teenage Alcoholism: 5 Hints Your Teen Is Alcohol Dependent
Many teenagers drink and experiment with alcohol. Three quarters of 12th graders and 2/3 of 10th graders admit to drinking in the last month. 90% of those binge drink which means they have 5 or more drinks in a short period of time, You might be wondering is there a serious risk your child will suffer from teenage alcoholism or is your teen just experimenting with alcohol and it is just a passing phase.
Experimenting with alcohol often progresses to alcohol abuse. In turn, alcohol abuse may progress to teenage alcoholism also known as alcohol dependence. The different terms refer to the severity of the alcohol problem.
The main clue detecting teenage drug and alcohol abuse is if your teen is unable to stop after several drinks (or using drugs repeatedly) and if drinking is occurring on a frequent basis.
Here are 5 hints your teen’s brain has become alcohol dependent:
1. He requires more and more alcohol to get intoxicated.
2. He continues to drink even though he is aware of all the negative consequences of drinking (already has a DUI, failing school, family tension, risking car accident, losing license or going to jail).
3. He gets symptoms of alcohol withdrawal if he quits drinking.
4. He has had physical problems from drinking (acid reflux, liver problems, seizures, black-outs).
5. He has already tried to quit drinking and failed.
Here is a case of teenage alcoholism from my practice;
W.T. is 16 years old. He started drinking when he was 13 years old. His Dad is a functioning alcoholic. W.T. started out binge drinking on a Friday or Saturday night. Over time, his drinking increased to every single weekend and then progressed to drinking every day (and smoking pot frequently).
His parents tell me he has gotten kicked out of conventional public school. He went to a therapeutic boarding school when he was 14 years old for 6 months, but he relapsed within one month. He has gotten one DUI and is on probation. He continues to drink and use drugs. At first, his parents were in denial and now they feel that alcohol has stolen their boy away from them. They worry that their son will die in a car accident.
Young adults age 18-24 years old have the highest rate of alcohol abuse. It usually starts with teenage binge drinking. Children with an alcoholic parent, like my young patient, W.T., are at a higher risk of developing teenage alcoholism than children with non-alcoholic parents. The younger a teen is when he starts drinking, the higher risk of excessive drinking and serious alcohol problems as an adult.
Parents have a lot more influence than they realize in influencing their teenagers about drug and alcohol use. Awareness and knowledge of the differences between teenage alcohol abuse and teenage alcoholism (dependence) are important to aid in prevention and intervention of teenage alcoholism. There are a lot of strategies parents can use to intervene if teenage substance abuse is an issue with your teen or young adult child.
