Six Facts a Good Drug Rehab Will Not Tell You

When it comes to finding treatment for drug and alcohol addiction, most people are bombarded with so much information that eventually leaves them confused and unsure about the choice to make. With the use of the internet, hundreds of drug and alcohol rehabs have found ways to attract attention to themselves as to why they are the best in what they do. There are, however, six ‘facts’ that a good drug and alcohol rehab will not tell you:

Rehabilitation is for the rich – Whether directly or indirectly many drug and alcohol rehabs have eventually got their message across about who they are prepared to serve. With inflated costs, many have ultimately ruled out thousands of sick addicts that are unable pay their exaggerated weekly/monthly fees. A good drug and alcohol rehab does not have a preference for the rich or poor, they are there to serve both and as a result of this, their fees should be established to meet both demands.

You Will Need Insurance Before You Can Be Admitted -This is where most smiles and nice to meet you ends. Upon discovering that the addict does not have health insurance to cover the costs most rehab facilities close their doors. While we cannot deny that our world is driven with a capitalist mentality, we are to bear in mind that saving lives should be the main focus of a drug and alcohol rehab. If after two minutes of relating your addiction problem, the next question is ”do you have health insurance”, then obviously it is time to search elsewhere.

Every Addict Is The Same – No two addicts are the same and as such, no two drug treatment can be the same for different people. Each individual is a product of his immediate environment and requires treatment that has been tailored to specifically suit his needs. If a drug and alcohol rehab is not prepared to evaluate the best approach to take for your addiction, then forget it, go elsewhere- where your individuality will be met with your specific needs.

Rehabilitation is Difficult – We all have seen scenes that have portrayed rehabilitation as a nightmare. While we will admit that rehabilitation requires a dedicated effort from both the rehab clinic and the addict, it is ultimately the drug rehabs responsibility to create a program that is interactive and undergoes constant changes to ensure that it offers the most up-to-date treatment on the market. Once this has been accomplished, then rehabilitation should be seen as a malleable challenge and not an obstacle.

Rehabilitation Ends – Given our weakness as human beings to crave negative influences and just about anything that causes us to ‘dig a hole’ for ourselves, there is never an end to rehabilitation. All recovered addicts should be encouraged to avoid relapse, by establishing guidelines and follow-up programs that monitor each recovered resident with the intent to keep him/her from falling into the pits of drugs again. If the drug and alcohol rehab that you are interested in does not have a relapse program then you are on your own when you eventually tell them goodbye.

Counseling Is the Key – I have found in my 10 years of career, that counseling cannot be the only method I am prepared to use to reach a drug addict. A drug addict has to be surrounded with love, compassion, and group activities that help him/her see life as a gift and not as a burden. Rehabilitation cannot be just about counseling, nor finely built tennis courts, there has to be a well developed program headed with highly qualified professionals that are flexible in their to approach to the addict.
