Senator Dale Volker Gets Smacked Down Over Drug War.m4v

Anthony Papa Manager of Media Relations for the Drug Policy Alliance and author of “15 to Life” smacks down Republican Senator Dale Volker of the 59th District for his prison gerrymandering on CNBC’s Charles Grodin Show in 1997. Volker recently retired before new legislation that was introduced by Senator Eric Schneidman (D. 31st District) was passed banning this practice. Prison gerrymandering (PG) was an unfair practice that increased the populations of rural upstate districts with prisoners who were mostly from urban areas. According to Peter Wagner of the Prison Policy Initiative, an organization that pioneered the challenge of PG, when legislative districts are now redrawn in 2011, 26000 prisoners will be counted as part of their home communities in the five boroughs of NYC, instead of the prisons they are housed in. www.huffingtonpost.com
