Salivary Amylase Lab Questions?

Question by tylerpyatt3: salivary amylase lab questions?
last thursday i did a lab in my biology class called “Salivary Amylase Lab”. it involved spitting in a cup and mixing it with a little water. then dumping all that into several test tubes. 1 we placed in boild water 1 in ice cold water.. the others left a room temp. after about 10 minutes i think we put in som blue stuff called benedikts solution and put in boiling water…

there are a couple follow up questions i do not understand.
1. Describe the reaction catalyzed by the salivary amylase enzyme.
i dont get what happened. the color blue changed and some stuff settled to the bottom but i dont have any idea what went on.

2. Explain how you were able to measure the rate of the above reaction in this lab.

i really dont have any idea what happened in this experiment. i have many other questions but i think if I knew these i could figure them out. im not asking you to do my homework but any help would be great.

thanks
