Regarding Dextroamphetamine, Sleep Deprivation and Brain Damage?

Question by Kyle: Regarding dextroamphetamine, sleep deprivation and brain damage?
I would prefer answers solely from health professionals or people who have been prescribed medication for ADHD. I have been on adderall for about eight months now and it has really helped me focus in school. The only issue I have with it is that it is really hard to fall a sleep, especially when I’m very stressed. It probably doesn’t help that my sleep schedule has been very erratic for a few years now. Since the semester has begun (about mid august) I average anywhere from as much as 6-7 hours to 3-4 hours of sleep ,each night, a week. Majority of the time it about 4.5 to 5 hours. Occasionally, when I have a bunch of homework or an exam, it is as little as 2 hours in a 40 hour period (this has only happened a couple times). On such sleep deprived weeks I will sleep about 10 hours each night on the weekend. I have done research on the internet but have found little reliable information on the repercussions of lack of sleep and amphetamine use. Can I develope permanent brain damage over time? Does anyone have any experience or advice on this matter? How can I get on a good sleep schedule? I am on no other medication and have eradicated alcohol and marijuana from my life about the time i started taking adderall. Any advice will be greatly appreciated and the best will receive 10 points for best answer.
Also, I am prescribed 20 mg per day. On occasion, i will take 30-35 if I am super busy. I know that this is technically abusing the medication so I try not to do it often

First, you cannot cause brain damage by intermittent lack of sleep or from taking your med for ADHD. You are worrying about something that really doesn’t need any attention. Intermittent lack of sleep is common for anyone in school and causes no long-term problems. Until you are out of school, there probably will never be a “good sleep schedule” unless you stop studying at a certain time each night which probably isn’t possible. A good sleep schedule means going to bed at the same time each night and getting up at the same time each morning which usually isn’t compatible with any studying. Taking extra tabs contributes to lack of sleep and I would recommend that you stop doing this at all, even if it is intermittently. Once you are done with school or during holiday breaks, that is the time when you try to get extra sleep. You are spending too much time worrying about a problem that doesn’t exist.
