Question by Gerry H: help! Trying to join the navy?
Hello i am 18 years old and im trying to join the navy as a hospital corpsman more than anything. before deciding to go with the navy i was working with an army recruiter who had me lie about two things at meps (by the way i passed the physical at meps). the two things he told me to lie about were my use of my prescription of accutane which i have been off of for 2 years(individuals are eligible to join after stopping treatment a year before enlistment) and he told me to lie about my prescription drug abuse with oxycottin about 6 months ago. the problem is that when i was experimenting with the oxycottin for about a month i became depressed and told my mother about the situation. she got worried and took me to ecmc(local hospital) for “detox” which was not needed. at ecmc i talked with a few doctors there and told them about my drug abuse and depression. they said that i was stable and suggested i might talk to a psychologist. i have experimented with drugs but by no means am i a “druggie” and have been clean ever since this incident and no longer am i depressed. the problem is when my mother was making phone calls when this incident occured she called my doctor and he happened to write down on a piece of paper that i was treated at ecmc for oxycottin on that date. MY QUESTION IS DO I HAVE A RIGHT TO REMOVE THAT PIECE OF PAPER FROM MY CIVILIAN MEDICAL FOLDER BEFORE I JOIN? the navy recruiter is not aware of any of this. it is the only thing that is holding me back from my career. i am worried that if they find out about this incident once i am enlisted i will be discharged which is completely understandable. it was a rough patch in my life and its over. thank you for your time and your answers. i really appreciate it.

The military is all about integrity. If you lie to get in and they find out you will be screwed. Be honest and take reponsibility for your actions, and let them decide whether or not you should join. Don’t lie just to get your way
