Rehab Ward

I visited a rehabilitation hospital in the outlying area of Rajama (30 km outside of Colombo). It is cares for people who have injuries which require long term care including spinal cord injuries, head injuries and strokes. I was able to visit the wards, meet the OT staff, consult on patients and provide some instruction in management of rehab patients (positioning, soft tissue, edema mobilization, splinting). I met Jegan who is a 15 year old boy who happened to be under a coconut tree. Someone else above was picking coconuts and dropping them down and accidentally hit him, resulting in paralysis from his neck down. Unable to move his arms and legs, he has a motorized wheelchair which he controls using a chin control device. It was good to see other aspects of rehabilitation care in Sri Lanka.
