AA or Alcoholics Anonymous says that the expert on alcoholism is the alcoholic. You can get your questions answered at an Open AA meeting. An Open AA meeting allows nonalcoholics to attend…as opposed to Closed AA meetings which is only for alcoholics. Go to the aa website…www.aa.org to locate a meeting in your area. By hearing alcoholics talk about the disease of alcoholism, you should get your questions answered.

Also, Al-Anon is for friends and family members of alcoholics, at an al-anon meeting you would get the whole picture of alcoholism. Their website is…www.alanon.org…to locate al-anon meetings in your community. Good Luck.

Hi,
These are very important questions you are asking.
Let me introduce myself first, I am the webmaster of http://www.alcoholism-guide.com/ all the answers I will provide you are based on material from my site.

1. Scientifically and across the medical world alcoholism considered to be a disease.
Disease” is often used to refer to any condition that causes discomfort, dysfunction, distress, social problems, and/or death to the person afflicted.
“Disease” is also dis-ease, or without ease, thus, it’s easy to see why formally alcoholism fall into this category.

2. This is to general question, I will direct you to http://www.alcoholism-guide.com/what-is-alcoholism.html – to get the general information you need.

3. Great question, first it depends on which stage of alcoholism that person is at. On early stages it’s possible to recover from the alcohol addiction by close family members and family doctor help. Alcoholic at the more advance stages will need to first have an alcohol detoxification, followed be a professional (often inpatient) care.

4. The effects of alcoholism range from sleeping disorders to marriage problems and in serious cases, even death. As the drinking pattern deteriorates the effects on the family members, friends and every daily routine in the drinker’s life dramatically increase.

you will find all the information at http://www.alcoholism-guide.com/effects-of-alcoholism.html

6. it is very likely that some people are genetically predisposed to an alcohol addiction. People with a family history of alcoholism are more likely to begin drinking before the age of 20 and to become alcoholic.
One study showed there is a three- to four- fold prevalence of alcohol dependence among first-degree relatives to an alcoholic when compared to people of the general population.
Similarly, recent twin-family studies suggest that there is an increased likelihood of alcohol dependence if parents or other family members are alcoholics.
Although genetic plays a significant role in alcoholism, the exact genetic variations and corresponding inherited traits are yet to be discovered.
Currently, researchers are working to discover the actual genes that put people at risk for alcoholism.

8. There is no magic pill yet to cure alcoholism, but there are some drugs that are very helpful in reducing the urge for drinking alcohol. Medications are part of most alcoholism treatment and found to be useful for those who are sincerely trying to quit drinking.
9. There are short-term effects on the brain, i.e. what happens right at the time of the actual drinking, and there are long-term effects. Both are dangerous but very different. which of them is more important for you to know about?
10. Alcoholism is responsible for more family problems than any other single cause. According to the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse, one in four children exposed to family alcohol abuse or alcoholism.

Bridget F. Grant, Ph.D. claims:

“Children of alcoholics may be neglected or abused and frequently face economic hardship and social isolation. They also are vulnerable to psychopathology and medical problems, including an increased risk for themselves developing alcohol abuse or alcohol alcoholism.”

Children of alcoholics may suffer from low self-esteem, loneliness, guilt, feelings of helplessness, fears of abandonment, and chronic depression (Berger, 1993).

In some cases the children feel responsible for the alcohol problems of their parents and may think they created the problem. A Unites States government survey shows that 30 percent of young women who did’t complete high school had grown up in families with alcoholic parents (Berger, 1993, p.75).
