A 16-year-old boy crouched in his mother’s closet in June 1997, coming down from LSD while police rushed to answer his neighbor’s plea for help. Jason Kalapp was hiding. “Like a child,” said his mother, who asked only to be named Marie. Kalapp had just forced his way into his 24-year-old neighbor’s home, beat her with a metal bar and raped her twice in her bathroom.
