Is the Prescription Drug Adderall the Same as Speed?

Question by Jake: Is the prescription drug Adderall the same as Speed?
I’m just wondering, because I was prescribed Adderall for my ADHD. I’ve heard that this is the same as Speed. Is it the same thing?

No, the two are slightly different. What’s commonly referred to as “speed” is amphetamine, a psychostimulant drug that increases wakefulness. Adderal is made up of racemic amphetamine and dextroamphetamine, which are eventually metabolized into amphetamine by the body. The two drugs are chemically different but have similar effects. “Speed” is also illegal, while Adderal is perfectly legal with a prescription.
