Is Psychiatry Going Too Far?
Question by Lily: Is psychiatry going too far?
Why does it seem that there is a mental illness for everything?
Fundamentally due to the nature of statistics, there will be people that are abnormal to others.
However, from the statistics I have looked at, most (98% of people that voluntarily enter a mental hospital will come out with a diagnosis either of a mild mental illness) and then prescribed a drug.
I myself have been prescribed Risperdal for Asperger’s Syndrome which I believe is damright stupid.
There is also a major mismatch between individualism and psychiatry.
I recently started to enjoy the EMO concept and this seemed to be misinterpreted as depression…
The fact was I was getting much enjoyment from it, however, those around me thought I was too into it… This was the reason why I decided to voluntarily admit myself because my family thought I was going crazy…
The problem was I could stop whenever I wanted. I’m not sure why they tried to give me anti-depressants…
Is it just me or is something fishy going on?
Anyway, the nurses told me to allow them to prescribe whatever so they could make money and that I didn’t have to take any of it… So therefore my private health insurance is now empty and I haven’t taken any pills…
I thought this was bullshit, however, the more I read about it online. The more I am convinced that there should be safeguards such as paying psychiatrists minimum wage only. This likewise should also be extended to the finance industry.
Well the nurse was actually really nice and actually told them I had taken the medication when in fact I hadn’t.
Clearly, she had my best interests at hand because I had been with her for many hours compared to the 15-30 minutes with the psychiatrist…
She understood me… The psychiatrists either due to their lack of time didn’t seem to understand my situation. Why are they so busy and why do they make such rash judgments?
Who knows…
Maybe, statistically I just had bad luck.
However, there are so many cases of neglect in the mental health system that it’s a joke. You only see your psychiatrist maybe for like 10 minutes a day and then they leave you alone. The lack of a proper lengthy diagnosis really makes you question if they are doing something wrong.
I had to write several essays detailing why I was feeling the way I was. Only after this time did they let me go… It’s like they don’t have time to listen. They would rather wait for me to write a 10 page essay for them.
If they have the time to read my essays….
Why couldn’t they just talk for longer????????
As you can see it defies common sense, maybe psychiatrists should take a course in common sense…
Time is not an excuse because they ended up reading my 10 page essays anyway… Maybe they don’t like talking? Maybe they don’t like communication? Who knows… Seriously it’s so messed up.
Yeah. LOL!
I guess when you consider it from the viewpoint of an outsider looking in at me. I have to admit in this context; I was quite weird.
I was writing this supposed “Dark Poetry”. This comes with the genre and people actually applaud you for your comments on life…
However, at no point was I cutting myself…
I probably have Asperger’s Syndrome to some extent. However, most people still state it is a myth and that it is normal behaviour in those that have not yet developed “specialised social skills”.
The EMO genre just fit in with my lack of friends. In fact it helped me generate more friends…
So go figure. It cured my Asperger’s Syndrome you might say. Seriously, I don’t think it’s even right…

I do agree that everything seems to have a pill these days. Certainly the majority of people diagnosed as mentally ill do not have any problem with their brain at all. But there is hardly anybody left these days that can adequately provide genuine counseling to get people’s lives back on track. People who know how to do this are minimalized and made to look stupid because they don’t have a degree in psychotherapy. It is indeed part of the drug racket to a certain degree. However… with that said, there is definitely an imbalance when you choose to emulate the ‘EMO’ concept. If you were just dressing up and having fun with it, then you should have been clear on that to your family. If you were cutting yourself or acting out like these kids sometimes do, then that is a whole different thing. Not necessarily a mental illness, but definitely an emotional issue. In other words, if you act ‘crazy’ people will assume you are crazy. Especially if you have already been diagnosed with something that can account for erratic social behaviours. You don’t have to be a generic, and you don’t have to change yourself to fit in. That means you don’t have to adopt anyone’s concept.. not your parents side of it and be all straight laced and ‘normal’ but certainly don’t adopt some silly emotional concept teenage drama thing that will make everybody think you are off your rocker. Instead, why not tap into your own creativity, be your own outstanding creative self and not need gimmicks? Sure some people might still think you are a weirdo, but that is ok.. at least they won’t be worried sick you are going to hurt yourself and you won’t end up in a mental facility again.
