Is It Bad to Take Adderall Undiagnosed?

Question by Heheblahblah: Is it bad to take adderall undiagnosed?
I’m not diagnosed, but a lot of my friends take adderall to help them stay focused while studying. Today i tried 10mg fast release and it only lasted pretty lightly for two hours. I have 36mg extended release. Though the 10mg had little effect, I got my homework done way faster and this is the first time in weeks i’ll be getting more than 3 hours of sleep. If i take once every two weeks to keep myself from being sleep deprived is that bad? Also why did 10mg have not a big effect on me? Also what are the pros/cons of adderall?

Yes it is bad, because it is an amphetamine. Amphetamine is a mind altering drug.

There’s something you, and many others, don’t seem to understand. Adderall was never, ever meant to make someone better at homework, complete tasks quickly or in excess. What Adderall IS for is to help someone with ADHD and help them focus one fewer things at one time, instead of a million things in a short period of time.

ADHD is a disorder in the brain. And I’m not talking about the over-diagnosis of lazy people with bad grades blaming it on ADHD — I’m talking about an actual, legitimate disorder existing in the brain. When these people take a low dose of drugs like adderall, it has a certain effect, a certain chemical reaction, that is NOT going to happen in your brain. For someone with ADHD to get the speedy effect, they would have to take a lot more of the drug. But for you, the same low dose that makes an ADHD patient a normal attention level, makes you high.

Yes, high. Not more efficient, not better at studying, not faster at writing papers — high. You are high on a habit forming drug. If it wasn’t bad for you to take it without being diagnosed, then why did you think there was a prescription to begin with? Because it is obviously not safe for everyone.

While we are on the topic of being “faster” and more efficient with schoolwork, let me also bring you back to the idea that ADHD people have trouble focusing. It can take a long time to get things done when you have an attention disorder, which can be helped with meds and various Other strategies. For you, you should be able to get things done in a timely manner. You should be able to do your homework on time without drugs, and if you can’t, then taking these drugs is not “helping” is it simply you being lazy, having poor time management skills or both. Even ADHD people have to organize themselves and manage their time properly, so what are you taking drugs for if you are perfectly capable of doing these things on your own?

Hell, even if you are diagnosed, if you take more than prescribed, you’re taking speed. Speed does not make you do things faster or more efficiently, it just makes you think you do. Meth and cocaine have the same effect, to put it in perspective for you.

On that note, when you say “10mg didn’t have a big effect on me,” … Well, obviously it did. You remember so vividly. If it didn’t have a big effect on you then you would not have even bothered to question it.

Also, let’s face it. I used to correct papers in college, and it’s soooo incredibly obvious when someone bought adderall just to write an essay. You literally can’t even try to cover it up – When you’re high on amphetamine, you think you’re writing about something completely mind blowing and it shows when someone else reads it. Your teachers aren’t idiots. Don’t be dumb.
