Addiction isn’t sin, nor is it mental illness. Addiction is a physiological response to a particular substance. By definition, addiction is physical dependency on a substance. Therefore, sex, gambling, smoking, chocolate, and overeating are not real additions. The word “addiction” has come to be used in a very casual way to refer to “habits” or obsessions that people develop. Of the things that you mentioned, alcohol and certain drugs are actually addictive.
