If Everyone Cared Would Racism Exist?

As part of a Global and Consumer Culture group assignment, the following video, If Everyone Cared, Would Racism Exist? explores the positive and negative effects of globalization on racism. Globalization not only confronts racism socially but also economically and technologically. The video includes interviews from individuals of various ethnic backgrounds, which allows one to better understand the different perspectives gained from globalization in terms of individuality and ethnicity. Using Thomas Friedmans ideas about globalization and how it increasingly affects how people acquire information, this documentary strives to find a balance between racism and how people can change the negative effect it has on society. The documentary begins by providing definitions of globalization and racism followed by interviews of Auburn University students about their opinions on both issues. One slide, which shows the 1970 US Civil Rights Commissions definition of racism, provides a catalyst for the videos theme. The documentary also includes video clips regarding personal opinions on typical, modern-day stereotypes, as well as peoples presumptions about various races. It addresses how people have the almost instantaneous ability to get their personal opinions out onto the Internet for others to view, further contributing to the effects of globalization.
