i have always heard that the effects of marijuana last anywhere between 1 – 4 hours

what does this depend on?

does it depend on things like,
type and quality of the marijuana?
the persons tolerance to the marijuana?

Yes to all those and the way you imbibe it also has an effect – eating it in food may make the effect last longer.
