How can laypeople make sense of scientific studies if they’re chock-full of statistical expressions? Is there any work-around for laypeople to understand loads of sigma expressions?

They can’t!!! In reality, you will not ever be able to truly understand a scientific or mathematical concept, unless you understand how it was derived, where it came from, why things are the way they are.

Dumbing it down for lay people doesn’t help them understand. It only helps them feel like they understand, and then they move on with their lifes.
