Hakeem Jeffries – Sponsoring State Legislation to End Unlawful Marijuana Arrests in NY – Take Action: bit.ly Assembly Member Hakeem Jeffries (Brooklyn) is the sponsor of bi-partisan legislation in New York that would help put an end to tens of thousands of illegal, racially biased, and costly marijuana arrests in New York. Police make these arrests by exploiting a “loophole” that makes possessing marijuana in public view a misdemeanor. Oftentimes, the police demand that people — usually young people of color — empty their pockets, and when they do the marijuana becomes in public view and they are charged and arrested for the misdemeanor marijuana possession.
