Grandparents Badly Need Financial Help Raising Two Baby Girls – Any Ideas Where to Turn?

Question by lindyboo: Grandparents badly need financial help raising two baby girls – Any ideas where to turn?
My brother and his wife have been caring for their two granddaughters, ages 3 and 1. Their son is the kids’ father and he’s 20 and unemployed but actively trying to find a job. He is divorcing the mother, who is mentally unstable and recently has been in and out of drug rehab. So there’s no “child support” available from them. My brother’s paycheck is the only income in the house.

My brother & sis-in-law were already struggling financially – barely making it – so now it’s even tougher. I found out yesterday that their water was about to be cut off. They managed to borrow some money to stop that but …. it’s not good. Sis said yesterday she had 4 diapers and not much food. I am sending them a little money but they need something more.

I was told that they can’t get food stamps because they’re not the official -what? Guardians? Custodial caregivers? Would it be an agency like Adoption Services or something? I know I can google but I thought maybe I could get some other advice from some of you guys with any similar experiences??

They adore these girls; we all do (me = proud aunt =) and it’s a strange situation. They did call my sis-in-law “Granna”. Now they’re calling her Mom and they call their real mom something that sounds like “Mutter”.

Their son should be able to get food stamps and government assistance. Their church can be a big help in those situations as well.
