Someone who is experiencing issues with alcohol and drug abuse as well as a mental disorder is proven to have dual diagnosis. Dual diagnosis indicates the occurrence of two essentially debilitating issues that affect an individual both mentally and physically. This can be depression and alcoholism or depression and drug abuse. There are various types of dual diagnosis treatment centers in the United States that provide treatment that integrates both diseases. This is ideal because it gives the person “one shot,” at starting on the road to recovery instead of dealing with one treatment and then tackling the next.

When someone has a mental illness, they are likely to develop other issues such as drugs or alcohol addiction. They use the drugs and the alcohol to medicate the pain and the hurt that they are feeling during their mental illness. However, most therapists will pay more attention to the drug or alcohol abuse instead of the mental illness. The result can be devastating for the person who is going through this and that is why the right treatment is essential.

The good news, though, is that most people do reach the goal of recovery when they are determined in the beginning to succeed. Some go on to lead normal lives and some even go back and volunteer in the program within the dual diagnosis treatment centers. This is to be commended because the person or persons don’t have to go back, but apparently, they must have seen the need for their voluntary service to want to do that.

In treatment, the person will be taught how to build meaningful relationships without having to abuse drugs or alcohol. They will be taught how to manage their time, their education and their jobs. They will be taught how to communicate with family on an intimate level and how everyone needs each other to survive in life.

The chances of someone recovery from dual diagnosis will improve when the individual receives treatment that is integrated. This means that they have a combined treatment plan that encompasses both the substance abuse issue and their mental issue. Of course, there are some that experience relapse and may think that they have failed, but the odds were already stacked against them and relapse does not necessarily mean that they should give up.

At dual diagnosis treatment centers, they will be instructed how to handle this type of situation and what they must do to ensure that they are on the right path to recovery if they have to repeat treatment. It is essential to note that families and professionals are not able to force anyone to accept treatment even in an intervention scenario. However, what both the family and the professional can do is to ignite passion in the person by motivating them towards recovery and giving them the support that they need to succeed.
