4)    A good exercise program helps develop stronger muscles around the joint attacked by arthritis. Such stronger muscles would help to remove pressure from the painful joint.

Drugs used in Arthritis Treatment

a)    NSAIDS (non-steroidal anti inflammation drugs) have found a common place in the treatment of arthritis. They prevent the release of prostaglandins which is the body chemical that if released causes fever, pain and inflammation. NSAIDS despite being helpful can result in some untoward effects like ulcer and so should be used as prescribed by a physician.

b)    Cox-2 inhibitors – substitutes for NSAIDS which does not cause stomach problem.

c)    Salycylates e.g. aspirin also helps and is prescribed by many doctors for the patients. However it has side effects that range from Kidney damages to ulcer of the intestine.

d)    Glucocorticoids: very helpful in treating inflammation and must be used with the help of a physician.
Other drugs used in the treatment of arthritis are anti-malarials e.g. chlorine, antibiotics e.g. minocycline, sulfa drugs e.g. sulfasalazine, Azathroprine and gout drugs.
