Samnang goes with orphanage sponsorship little story

Samnang, born in July 2007, is a bright, cheery little boy who is a pleasure to his nanny, and who loves picture books and bouncing rubber animals especially. His parents both died of HIV, but he arrived at Roteang only HIV antibody positive. He also has negative tests for Hepatitis B and C and syphilis as well as a negative TB test. He will probably grow up at Roteang Orphanage, and will receive the best love and attention, education, medical care we can give him. It would be great if he could be sponsored.
Srey Neth came to Roteang from TSF’s Owens House, a residence for HIV infected women from the countryside who come into Phnom Penh to deliver their babies. The women are given niviripine in labor, and the infants receive it within hours of birth, thus cutting down the transmission rate of HIV from mother to child, from 25% to about 5%. Although most of the mothers at Owens House are in HIV treatment programs, they frequently are too late in enrolling. Srey Neth’s mother died two months after her baby’s birth in October 2006, and Srey Neth came to us in December. Srey Neth herself is HIV antibody positive, but not infected; her other screens are also clear.
Srey Neth enjoys her 3-year-old group in TSF’s preschool; she especially delights in using colored markers, dancing, and playing rhythm band instruments. She has many friends, as she is happy and outgoing, and really considerate of other children. She is thriving at Roteang, and we would love to have a sponsor for her.
Roteang Orphanage now has 74 children in two buildings [thanks to our new residence]. Our cook, Kim Heng, and her helpers feed about 112 people three nutritious meals a day! Costs of food keep rising- partly because our children keep growing-but prices are up too. We currently have 56 of our 74 children sponsored, which is a huge help with the 00- 00 monthly costs of the orphanage, that include nanny care, food, schooling, immunization and all necessary medical care, as well as a share of staff salaries and maintenance costs of buildings, playground, and our 10 –year-old van.
Orphanage sponsorship is 00 a year, which can be paid quarterly. Sponsors receive our great thanks, a tax donation, quarterly pictures and updates about their child! Please join us in supporting these gorgeous children—we have lots of individuals, but also several family groups, church groups, and one Mt Holyoke class of 1952 group who already are! Step Up! Pencils Up!
Black Pencil Project lauds Step Juan; a walking expedition done by one man Tomas Leonor. The idea is to walk from Pagudpod (northern part of Luzon) to Sorsogon (southern part of Luzon) without any means of vehicular assistance and to do this for several weeks, straight, stopping only for food and rest. His walk will cover around 1,294 kilometers of long highways and pass 33 major cities and 150 towns. The backbone and foundation for this idea is to raise funds for the cancer children under the Cancer Warriors Foundation.
Step Juan will start January 11, 2010.
This is a project that starts with a dream of one man that will hopefully end with a selfless goal of helping cure children under the Cancer Warriors Treatment Program.
“It’s no brainer that we are likely to extend support to Step Juan, knowing its a noble concept and we belong within the same circle of outdoor enthusiasts”, says Edwin Karganilla, a seasoned mountaineer and co-founder of Black Pencil Project.
We thought of drum-beating Tomas walking expedition by matching ten (10) black pencils (Jumbo pencils) for every kilometer that he will walk during the entire journey to give it to his preferred beneficiary. We hope to raise 12,940 pencils or more by the time Tomas reaches Sorsogon. Karganilla added.
