In Oregon when I go to a small town and see someone who’s all burned out, I worry that they are a meth addict. What I saw on both Hawaii and in New Zealand are what seem to be island malaises.

I saw burned out people who were literally burned out. They had glassy eyed looks on their faces, sometimes bad nutrition, and deep, deep suntans that I worried had cooked their brains.

But they were still nice people (at least when they weren’t robbing me at midnight to get their next fix)
