Crack cocaine made its way into our world in 1980’s. It was a seemingly cheaper alternative to regular powder cocaine. It was primarily abused and sold in the inner-cities of the United States. This ignited a cycle of alarming addiction and intense gang wars. Crack also brought with it social and health problems that stem from its abuse. Since it’s beginning in the 80’s, crack has not lost any of its popularity. Drug rehab centers treat people from all walks of life from all over our world. A recent national survey shows that nearly 8 million people in the United States have tried crack, and about 700,000 use it on a regular basis.

Crack accelerates a person’s central nervous system; it also speeds up other body systems which causes a sharp increase in heart rate, blood pressure, and body temperature. Temporary effects include feelings of awareness and exhilaration, along with extreme paranoia and a diminished appetite. The high from crack usually lasts for just a few minutes with the momentary extreme euphoria rapidly followed by an equally intense low that includes nervousness, despair, and an intense craving for more crack. This creates a never ending cycle of looking for out the drug and doing almost anything to obtain it.

Inpatient drug rehab breaks this cycle of addiction. By taking the users away from the drug and the drug environment and thoroughly cleansing their systems, they are no longer susceptible to physical cravings caused by the chemical residuals left behind in the users system. Drug rehab professionals also work very hard to educate each addict showing him a new way to live. With cognitive rehabilitation and life skills, the student realizes how he can live life without crack or other mind altering substances and how his life and the lives of those around him will be infinitely better. Addicts need to recognize the truths of drug addiction and how it affects them as individuals, as well as how it affects their families and the world around them. This makes the severity of their addiction very clear as well as the negative impacts it has on everyone.
