Can I Use Surgical Spirit in My Spirit Camping Stove Instead of Methylated Spirit?

Question by ca_416: can I use surgical spirit in my spirit camping stove instead of methylated spirit?
I’ve been using Methlyated spirit in my camping stove for a long time now but all the shops in town are sold out. the guy at camping store told me to try surgical spirit but i tried it in a small pot and it’s almost exsplosive when lit and gives off an orange flame not a blue one like the mehtylated spirit. and the meth spirit seems to burn really slowly but this stuff burns out of control and faster.

I’d be careful burning different fuels in stove that was designed for a particular type of fuel. Different fuels have different heating values (measurement of energy in the fuel) and they have to mix with different amounts of air to provide complete combustion. The orange flame tells me that it’s not mixing with the oxygen correctly. The orifice holes in burners are designed for a certain type of fuel and flow rate. Changing the fuel can mess that balance all up.

Bottom line, I wouldn’t do it unless you can properly replace the orifice for that type of fuel.
