took a urine test and tested positive for amphetamines, never did illegal drugs in my life. however, i have been on the diet pill phentermine. last time i took one was a week before my drug screen.

There are a lot of different tests for drugs. In your case, the test just picked up on “amphetamine.” There are a lot of different amphetamines, some prescription, some not. Very often, the test is set to overlook, for example, a drug like Adderol, which is an amphetamine-based compound prescribed to ADHD clients.
In any case, the best thing for you to do is to appeal your case. You don’t say if the test was pre-screening for employment or a routine, random test for your current employer.
If a second test is being run, it will look further into the compound and determine its source.
