Being Part of a Community for Crystal Meth Addicts

Crystal Meth addicts in recovery often feel alone and secluded for one reason or another. They may not be getting the proper care and guidance needed to overcome such a horrible dependence. That is why more and more researchers are realizing being part of a community specifically for other crystal meth addicts as they overcome addiction can make a significant impact on recovery.

Firstly, it is important to understand crystal meth addicts are not always as hard off as you may think. They are often highly-functioning people, who can hold jobs and homes, but they need significantly more counseling and support to kick the addictive habit, according to a report in the “Melbourne Weekly,” paper based out of the southern tip of Australia.

Amy Pennay, a researcher in the region, headed a new study that followed crystal meth addicts and their recovery. She said the trial clinic had an 85 percent return rate for people following up on their treatment for crystal meth, as opposed to just 25 percent for general drug and alcohol treatment. It shows when crystal meth addicts feel part of a group, they continue to return for the support. The nature of this drug is more psychological and less physically draining. Because of this, many crystal meth addicts feel more comfortable being with people who understand the stressful mental state they may be in.

It is also important to realize that Meth users are in a community all their own. Because the drug is unlike many others, people addicted to meth often need more guidance and care than other drug users. The most interesting observation to take from this study is for crystal meth users have their own treatment area, because they reportedly disliked being treated alongside heroin and alcohol users who had dramatic physical withdrawal symptoms. The study found that while meth users had fewer physical withdrawal symptoms they needed much more psychological care. It proves that having a base for these users to feel comfortable in was the most important step for them. Treatment facilities that provide that safe, comforting environment that is all their own is taking a step in the right direction to overcome crystal meth addiction
