Are Seroquel and Nardil Contraindicated?

Question by AndreaDona, Houston TX.: are Seroquel and Nardil contraindicated?
I am withdrawing off of Clonazepam. I researched “Medications that increase GABA production in the brain”. GABA is a potent neurotransmitter that controls other neurotransmitters ie: serotonin and norepinephrine. I found that the drug Nardil which is a MAOI that is suppose to potentiate the production of GABA which the clonazepam has muted. I have subsquently also been prescribed Seroquel to help with the clonazepam withdrawal syndrome. I am experiencing high blood pressure, headaches, food cravings that I cannot feed, as well as severe bouts of confusion. My research has only produced information that is above my clinical expertise. I am at a crux. Do I need to stop the Nardil, stop the seroquel, both or neither? I am scared! I don’t believe that my doctor has any useful insight in this matter. HELP!

Interactions between your selected drugs
phenelzine ↔ quetiapine

Applies to:Nardil (phenelzine) and Seroquel (quetiapine)

MONITOR: Central nervous system- and/or respiratory-depressant effects may be additively or synergistically increased in patients taking multiple drugs that cause these effects, especially in elderly or debilitated patients.

MANAGEMENT: During concomitant use of these drugs, patients should be monitored for potentially excessive or prolonged CNS and respiratory depression. Ambulatory patients should be counseled to avoid hazardous activities requiring mental alertness and motor coordination until they know how these agents affect them, and to notify their physician if they experience excessive or prolonged CNS effects that interfere with their normal activities.

You are at moderate risk of a drug interaction: Moderately clinically significant. Usually avoid combinations; use it only under special circumstances.

Your headaches and high blood pressure qualify as CNS symptoms. None of us here should advise you on what to take and what to stop sorry, because all the medications you are taking are powerful drugs that alter the brain chemistry, and we are not your primary care physician. I know this doesn’t help you much, so my only other suggestion is to find a different doctor that IS able to help you, or contact an addiction service, which will have specialists that may have answers for you.

Stop the Seroquel gradually. My friend was diagnosed with bipolar disorder and was taking seroquel, 4 a night and he would become really grumpy, sleepy. It’s like the psychiatrists needed to know if he is sleeping? It will cause weight gain, bloating and not getting the right medication that is needed. So let your doctor know about your symptoms. Believe me I have seen it first hand. He still has to take Lithium, Depakote, heart medication, meds for his thyroid, before he was waking up in the morning and shaking, now he feels better. And I hope you do to. My best for you in your endeavors. Good luck.
