Are Illegal Drugs Really That Bad?

Question by jenga: Are illegal drugs really that bad?
Now this is a subject for debate. I believe that some illegal drugs are less dangerous than various “legal” substances consumed throughout the world daily. For instance, the amount of damage alcohol does on a global scale to peoples health and possibly the amount of violence in the world. As quoted from several police forces in the UK, many violent offences are caused by alcohol. Alcohol can also be highly addictive and lots of people I know would be classed as alcoholic with the amount they drink. I don’t have anything against drinking, and I do have a drink now and then and occasionally get a bit drunk but always know when I have had to much and when to stop. Also, smoking cigarettes is a number one cause of lung cancers and various others and contains the highly addictive ingredient nicotine. On a scientific rating, nicotine is up there with Heroin and Cocaine for damage and addictiveness.

Now look at various “illegal” drugs such as cannabis. Obviously if smoked you can get the damage from high temperatures from ignition but in terms of state of mind people are much more calm, peaceful and overall more pleasant. I know people who smoke this and only when taken in excess can it be a problem. Like anything else like food and even exercise. Cannabis has proven pain killing effects for cancer patients and ms sufferers and also helps with depression. Vapourisation would be the best way to take this.

Any comment are appreciated.
I have researched a fair bit by reading various scientific papers and doing a bit of testing myself. I have found that any kind of excessive or abusive behavour towards any substance is a bad thing. It all boils down to chemical reactions in the brain, and the pleasure/reward system. Some people are more prone to having addictive behavours than others.

As for the post with the cannabis addict, I am sorry to hear this, there has to be some sort of group that helps people in these situations. She is suffering from her won genetics causing her to put getting high above anything else. I feel for people in these situations and abstinance is best for these kind of people.

I find people are brainwashed into having biased opinions on drugs when you think about it life is a gift you have only once and then its gone so make the most of it, but look after yourself and don’t over do it.
